HISTORY

In 1986 the Archdiocesan center was titled Seth Sarana and its first Director was  Rev.Fr. Malcolm Ranjith (currently the Secretary to the "Congregation for Divine Worship and Sacraments" in Vatican.). He initially set out the broad objectives and goals of Seth Sarana which were to provide awareness relating to the role of people in safeguarding and developing people’s initiatives with regard to justice, peace and human development. The center was to function as the social action arm of the Archdiocese and provide opportunities for the integral development of people.

Its aims were the animation of the clergy and faithful on their duties in assisting one another towards true integral development, planning and programming projects for the benefit of sectors that need assistance towards development, and the co-ordination of projects in the archdiocese in order to assist everyone in the best possible manner.

In 1987 the archdiocesan co-coordinator wrote to the four Episcopal vicars requesting that they nominate a regional co-coordinator and a lay representative to serve on the Seth Sarana board so as to broaden and diversify its work. Here he also mentioned the work so far carried out by Seth Sarana i.e. the Maggona agricultural training programme, the Colombo district canoe programme, the  Gampaha district integrated fisheries development programme, the Kalutara district canoe programme, Housing programmes in Waga, Munnakkara, Wadduwa, Paiyagale, Maggona and Kalamull, the Buddhidhana Archdiocesan Educational Fund and The Archdiocesan Development Fund.

At its inception Seth Sarana carried out a programme of animation for clergy and identified lay leaders. Various projects too were formulated to bring relief to marginalized groups. Of these the most important was the rehabilitation of select marginalized poor by providing self employment and generating opportunities in 1987.

The education scholarship program Buddhidhana which was started in 1987 today occupies an important place in Seth Sarana activities.
