SETH SARANA - SOCIAL WORK TRAINING WORKSHOP

HELD AT NUWARA ELIYA – 10 – 12 JUNE 2007

The theme of the Workshop was to act and think as a Group in order to further the concept of Community Development.

The Workshop centered on the following:

  ·         Personal and Common Goals

·         The Pattern of Approaching the People

·         Difficulties and Constraints faced when approaching the People

·         The solutions to be identified in overcoming the problems that may surface when approaching People

·         Planning Skills

·         Communication Skills

In conclusion it became clear that learning from past experiences was a key factor in identifying skills, knowledge and a change of attitude.

The Social Work Project could be sustained by effectively building the capacities of the Social Work Team and the Livelihood and Management Teams. These Teams will then be in a position to conduct their programmes independently within the available resources.

Advice from a Professional Social Worker could be sought only if the need arises.

The Workshop was mainly facilitated by the Caritas Germany Social Work Advisor, members of the Social Work Team and Management Team took turns in facilitating some segments of the programme. 

Caritas Germany staff, the Social Work Team, Livelihood Sector and Management staff participated in the Seminar.

Progress Report Feb 2007

 Weekly Meetings with Social Work Team.
 Evaluation of activities of the previous week.
 Planning for the following week.
 Participation in the Animators’ monthly progress meeting.

Liyannawatta Payagala

Several Meetings were held with Fr. Ivan Peterz for the settlement of the problems of Liyannawatte beneficiaries and the neighbours by social work animator Shiral Lloyd.
Caritas Staff visited on several occasions, and at the meeting held on 16th February , with     Fr. Ivan and the residents of Liyannawatte, it was decided to re-organize the social work activities.
 

Suggestions by the Residents

It was decided to repair the Drainage system at Liyannawatte.
Erect a statue of Mother Mary.
Construction of Chimneys for kitchens of the houses.
Construction of a children's Playground.
To appoint animator Uchitha as a Social Work Coordinator.
There is no decision regarding these suggestions. At the end of February social work animator Shiral was transferred back to his livelihood animator duties at Beruwala.
There are no social work animators at Liyannawatte resulting in a standstill of the work.

Ratmalana Moratuwa

Social work animator, to work with the livelihood team to arrange some awareness programmes on primary health.
Social Work Animators had a discussion with the Divisional Secretary at Ratmalana on several occasions regarding settlement of Tsunami Beneficiaries at Rathmalana G+ 3 Housing Project.
There is no precise decision on this matter.
At the end of February social work animator Sumith Jayasekara left us.
Dexter Fernando who was a social worker has now been reverted back to his livelihood animator work by Fr. Mahendra Gunathilake.
Therefore there is no social work animator at G+3.

Pallansena

Several Meetings were held with Fr. Edward Costa to organize social work activity programmes for beneficiaries.

Caritas Staff visited and had several meetings with Fr. Costa. They observed the ongoing work of the Housing Scheme and instructions given to contractors to complete the work by March 2007.

A need assessment of the beneficiaries is done by social work animator - Boniface Jayasantha.
At present we are having discussion with Pallansena Human Development Committee, and the Parish Priest to arrange community development activities.
