SETH SARANA -
TSUNAMI RECOVERY PROGRAMME
Following the December
2004 devastating tsunami Seth Sarana moved swiftly to
provide immediate relief to the victims of the tsunami. In a
matter of weeks in 2005 they moved quickly from this stage
to help in the reconstruction and rehabilitation effort with
our main facilitating Partner Caritas Germany in the 22
affected Parishes.
The programme focused on the
construction and repair of houses and the erecting of
temporary shelters for the displaced in the Colombo, Gampaha
and Kalutara Districts. In line with the ideals of Caritas
Germany the emphasis was on community participation in the
development process. Livelihood assets destroyed by the
tsunami e.g. Fishing Boats, Engines, Nets, Fishing Gear etc
as well as cash grants in support of a variety of small
businesses based on revolving fund schemes were provided to
those affected by the Tsunami.
In addition vocational training for
youth, community based development projects, empowerment of
the community, trauma counseling social and environmental
awareness programmes etc are being implemented.
The programme is scheduled to be
operative until 2009. New house constructions and repairs
have been considerably scaled down in 2007 with strategies
to strengthen and diversify Livelihood activities on a
sustainable footing to withstand the vagaries of a
fluctuating economy and long term development of communities
leading to the integration of the Tsunami and General
programme of Seth Sarana.
