Child Protection Programmes

Programmes on Child Protection were held as follows: 

August 1 -  For 325 School children from the Presbyterian School Colombo 

August 17 – For 105 Parents at the Jubilee Hall Kalutara 

August 30 – For 74 Parents at the Buddhagosha School Kalubowila (Greater Colombo)

The programme for children focused on the steps to be taken by children in order to avoid being abused and the means by which they could report any instances of abuse.The above events were facilitated by the Children’s and Womens Bureau of the Sri Lanka Police.


Childrens’ Values Based Programmes

The following programmes on Child based values were conducted as follows:

August 9 – For 42 children from the Caritas Village Housing Settlement facilitated by the Child Protection Authority of Sri Lanka

August 21 – For 81 parents from the Kalutara area whose children are recipients of  the       Scholarship Schemes operated by Seth Sarana. The programme was held at the Kalutara Jubilee Hall.  

August 22 -  For 68 parents of children in receipt of Scholarships awarded by Seth Sarana from the Ragama area at the St Peter & Paul Parish Hall Ragama.

August 23 – For 92 parents from the Negombo area whose children are in receipt of scholarships  awarded by Seth Sarana. The programme was held at the Jubilee Hall Negombo.

These three events were facilitated by a couple from the Archdiocese Christian Family Movement.

August 29 – For 350 children from the St John’s Parish in Modera Colombo. Facilitation was    by Rev Fr Sriyananda Director of Communications Colombo Archdiocese.

The crux of the Children’s Value Based Programmes centered on how parents should value their children and take steps to treat them lovingly and in a humane manner, educate, look after their daily needs adequately even in times of economic hardship and generally monitor their movements in order to safeguard them from the evils of society. 


Programme to Identify Children’s Talents

A programme to identify Children’s Talents was done on 8 August at a Tsunami Camp in Lunawa Moratuwa with the participation of 73 children living in this camp. Cultural and sports events were held where the talents and capabilities of the participants were identified for future development. The event was facilitated by a person experienced in working with people living in camps.

Celebration of Childrens Day: This event was celebrated on 30 August at the Pamunugama Parish Church with the participation of 410 children from the schools in the Negombo area. A meeting was held followed by sports and cultural events.

The programme was organized by Seth Sarana’s Children’s Unit with the assistance of the Parish Priest of Pamunugama.


Orientation Programme for Children (3rd July 2007)

An orientation Programme for parents was held in 3rd July at the Moratuwa Uyana Jubilee Hall.

The parents were told that their children were precious and therefore they should take all possible steps to safeguard and protect them from the evils of society, give them a good education, and teach them to avoid imitating the bad habits that they see around them.  

The Parents were also advised to bring to the notice of the authorities if they knew of any cause of child abuse/labour 94 parents from Animation group participated.

 The programme was conducted by the Womens & Children’s Bureau of the Sri Lanka Police.


Orientation Programmes for Children (29 June 2007)

On 29 June another Orientation Programme on Child values was held at St Mary's Boy's School Dehiwela attended by 85 children from Grades 8 to 10 of the school.

The programme focused on the problems faced by children in today's society and the measures that should be taken to safeguard themselves from issues arising out of these problems. The programme also set out the steps to be taken on how the education they received could be used meaningfully in their future development.

The programme was conducted by the Children's and Women's Bureau of the Sri Lanka Police.


Venue : Rathmalana Tsunami Camp                                                                               Date    : 22nd June 2007                      Participated : 46 Children

                                                                           

Workshop was held on 22nd June 2007 for 46 children living in a tsunami camp at Ratmalana. The theme of the workshop was now children should value education and use it as a means to live in society and abide by its norms. The children also took part in art class.                                                                         


Orientation Programme for Children (June 12 - 2007)

The Children’s Unit of Seth Sarana in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Police Children’s and Women’s Bureau organized an orientation programme to develop the values of children. 

The event was held on 12 June at the Holy Family Convent Dehiwela and was attended by the School’s children from grade 9 upwards.  A total of 360 children attended. 

The programme dealt with the role of the child in Society, the problems confronting adolescents and how a child should conduct oneself in society. 

The forum was also opened for questions and the questioned posed centered on the problems faced by children due to the current trends in society. 

To end the proceedings the members from the Bureau staged a short drama depicting the various ills faced by society.

Awareness Program  - 6th June 2007

An awareness programme was held on 6th June at the Jubille Hall Negombo organized by the Animators of the Negombo Sub Office for 40 children of members of small groups in the Sea Street area. 

The programme was to educate children on the proper use of their mental and physical faculties and it was facilitated by the NGO ESCAPE.


Residential Workshop for Students from the Young Christian Students (YCS) Movement

A three day seminar on Child Safety was held from May 4 to 6 for 88 members of the YCS Movement from the various Deaneries in the Colombo Archdiocese at the Subodhi Institute Piliyandala. 

The objective of the Seminar was to create an awareness among them about the need to lead a value based life. 

The programme also focused on carrying forward activities to realize these objectives viz:

Quality Work, Time Management, Enhancing Effectiveness and Increasing Productivity. 

The programme was facilitated by Professional Resource Persons and the event was co ordinated by the YCS Chaplain.


Awareness for Parents on Child Protection

A programme was held on 19 May in Modera on Child Protection for Parents of small groups in the area. The programme emphasized the need for parents to be vigilant about the whereabouts of their children and also closely monitor their behavioral patterns.

 The programme was facilitated by an official of the Child Protection Authority. 39 parents attended.

  


Programme on Children’s Safety

A programme on Children’s safety was conducted on 25 May for 54 children living in Tsunami Camps in the Moratuwa and Angulana areas. 

Before the programme commenced the children gathered informally, played games and fraternized with one another. The aim of the programme was to create an environment of happiness and contentment within the environs of the camp. 

The programme was facilitated by a volunteer experienced in conducting these programmes in Tsunami camps.
