National Animation Programme (NAP) Introduction >> Through the parish committees, Sethsarana builds Christian solidarity and a spirit of community to further economic self-reliance among parishioners and parish residents. Self-employment projects, wiping out rural indebtedness through thrift societies are part of this programme. Sethsarana community Animators involve parish volunteers in the projects as part of such community education and formation. In addition to parish committees, schools and voluntary groups too are coopted as effective for systematic social animation programmes as well as for community education and integral development. The NAP Team together with the Livelihood and Social Work Teams visited Penrith Estate Avissawella on 10 August to explain the scope and nature of their work in each of their sectors. This exercise is in preparation of the social activities which is to be done at Penrith Estate in the near future. 25 persons participated in this event. Under the Disaster Management Programme an event was held on 14 August at the Negombo Sea Street Fisheries Cooperative Hall to give awareness on how people should act in an emergency situation e.g. Floods, cyclones fires etc. The programme was facilitated by officials of the Gampaha Assistant Government Agents Office. 35 people participated. On 22 August the Small Enterprises Group organized a session at Moratuwa to give awareness to 23 persons on how to operate Revolving Loan Fund Schemes. Two animators were involved in this process. On 23 August at Katana in the Negombo area the NAP Coordinator canvassed the Cashew Corporation to sell quick bearing cashew saplings to the people of the area. This was done as a source of economic empowerment for the people while at the same time protecting the environment using the cashew leaves as a source of organic fertilizer. A number of saplings were sold at a nominal price. Cashew fetches a high price in the market. 30 people participated in this event. The NAP organized a seminar for 35 residents of the Caritas Village Ragama on 27 August in an effort to identify their talents and skills and build upon them for their future advancement.
