A base survey and Needs Assessment and situation analysis in the Colombo Archdiocese

 The survey is being carried out by the Social Work Team in collaboration with National institute of Social Development (NISD) which released 15 Final Year students following the Diploma Course in Social Work Studies to do this survey. They will mainly concentrate on collating the basic needs and a situation analysis of the people and to ascertain the scope of the social work that is to be undertaken by Seth Sarana in the future. Monitoring of the survey is to be done joining by Seth Sarana and the NISD.

It is proposed to do a random sample survey of about 1000 families of the various ethnic and religious group irrespective of the level of learning and other social consideration. The area to be covered are some of the Parishes in the 15 Deaneries in the Colombo, Gampaha & Kalutara District in the Archdiocese of Colombo taking into consideration the Government and other Administrative functions operative in these areas. It these areas. It is hoped to enlist the support of the Divisional Secretaries, other Local Authorities, Parish Priests, Lay Leaders and those who are keen on supporting the programme. Information is to be collect by meeting people and groups at Parishes, Gramasevaka Divisions, Tsunami Resettlements, urban and rural areas etc.  

It is planned to finalize the survey findings and investigate whether it could be intergraded with the other services currently provided by Seth Sarana.  

A questionnaire was used as a tool for the Base Survey. Currently the information collected is being analyzed and recorded taking into consideration the needs of the people in the Colombo Archdiocese. The cooperation of the Parish Priests, other religious denominations and Government and Local Government Agencies are greatly appreciated.  

It is noteworthy that collaborative work with the National Institute of Social Development (NISD) enabled Seth Sarana to enlist the support of a number of Government organizations in moving forward the Social Work activities.
